Ness Point

Very short call in with little effort and nothing about. One CORMORANT and that's it. Except that is until  a first winter GREY WAGTAIL flew onto the rocks. Stood for 30 seconds and flew off East heading for Holland.

North Dene's

Well done Julie a really good find with a PALID SWIFT around Birds Eye and North Dene's. I called in today just  before it disappeared. I picked the bird up High above the Oval but it was a distant view and as usual always high. The last one I saw was at Kessingland long ago.

SWT Carlton Marsh

The regular visit for a Wednesday afternoon. Walked out to the new hide on the North bund. Very smart hide being new. It was rather drafty with an East wind as the eaves are wide open. As I was approaching a bird flew  at 80ft from Oulton Marsh and landed in the reeds but I was not quick enough to get a shot of the BITTERN. at least four MARSH HARRIER with two male one female and a very dark young bird. With two COMMON BUZZARD and two KESTREL. A flock of 10 REDWING at the bend of the river. Four MEADOW PIPIT and three flocks of GOLDFINCH feeding on the thistles. About 60 birds in all. In the far distance over Borough St Peters several flock of PINK FOOTED GEESE about 300 birds in all.

SEA WATCH NESS POINT

High tide and late afternoon brought some interesting sightings. Frustratingly a auk flew through which remained unidentified. But better luck with other sightings. With 13 RTD and 11 GANNET. But best was a single GOOSANDER and a ARTIC SKUA which was intent on chasing a gull, which eventually threw up and fell onto the sea to feed. Also sculling South was a GREAT CREASTED GREBE.

Somerlyton Staith

Very bright day with a light wind, with rain coming in later. No real excitement but did have a skein of 41 PINK FOOTED GEESE flying into Haddiscoe  Marsh. Also single  MARSH HARRIER, COMMON BUZZARD. Behind us a off season CETTIE'S WARBLER was calling well. With a GREY HERON.

From Home

I don't seem to pick a HONEY BUZZARD up every year but this is now my third for the garden. All birds flying within feet of there usual track. It seems that this bird was flying along the same course. This must be a flight path that is used I assume for German birds that come over the North Sea hit the coast and head South. This bird was flying 180ft and Heading South, South West. With protruding long neck and long tail as well as slightly smaller than a buzzard I have no difficulty in calling it.

SWT Carlton Marsh

Not much action down on the marsh as the wind cut in from the South. Best bird was a small group of SNIPE that had taken cover from the wind. Altogether three birds sitting close. One was an obvious male with a good rustic tail and short beak. Female more lightly coloured and also longer bill. Only one BUZZARD and a GREEN WOODPECKER.

Lowestoft Harbour and Pathways.

Regular walk round Pathways and no real surprises. The number of MOORHEN is holding up and now a pair of WIGEON  have taken up residents.

Beside Bascule  Bridge to the East a young RED THROATED DIVER was loafing about.
