Home and Thrigby Hall Gardens.

Home: For the last four days a small bird has been heard more than seen around the garden and on house roofs. Would not stay still enough until today when it was as expected a young BLACK REDSTART. it was joined in late evening by an adult bird, when it all went quite. No ring on this bird so there is either two breeds from one pair or two pairs with young as one pair in the town have been rung as pulley, and no ring on this bird.

Minismere, Suffolk.

Meeting with the gang from WBC and a good evening with the following. I suppose in real terms the best bird was a very young ARCTIC TERN, only one but the description given is the best I have ever heard. That being like ice, which with Arctic is a good fit. But also a pic up on LITTLE STINT, SANDLING, GREEN SAND, COMMON SAND, RUFF with a very white type bird. Avocet counted out at 123 and other around COMMON BUZZARD, MARSH HARRIER, SPARROW HAWK, HOBBY, WREN, ROBIN, COMMON WHIETHROAT 2 STONECHAT 5, LAPWING, WHIMBRAL, REDSHANK, SPOTTED REDSHANK, MED GULL, YELLOW LEGGED GULL 3, SANDWICH TERN, COMMON TERN, ARCTIC TERN, REED WARBLER, SEDGE WARBLER, CETTIES WARBLER, MALLARD, MOORHEN, CARRION CROW, MAGPIE, SAND MARTIN, SWIFT, SWALLOW, BARNACAL GEESE, AVOCET, SHELLDUCK, RINGED P-LOVER, LITTLE RINGED PLOVER, HERRING GULL, LITTLE GULL 3, L.B.B.GULL. North Denes, Lowetoft.

Denes:  Walk round the normal paths that make up this site. I suppose the most unusual was a vole which was intent on running in and out in front of me. Rather to quick for pic, hence the bad one that follows. But what is the pale patch on its rump. Any ideas.

The count was as follows, with WHITETHROAT at four and three GREENFINCH feeding on cow parsley as well as eight TURNSTONE flying along the  North Wall.

Home: Fly over calling was four CURLEW all heading South as two pairs. But to my way of thinking I think one pair were young birds.                                              But was this a Reed Warbler?

Ness Point, Lowestoft.

Ness Point: Badly caught out by the onshore breeze as I tried to wet a worm, but with no joy as wind increased and to stay on rocks was rather wet from spray. So gave up and had a look through scope.

As for GANNET just one well offshore heading North, also four juv MED GULL and three adult birds. But the best was a South flying WHIMBRAL overhead. But as for this young BLACK HEADED GULL he was rather young "Don't look back in anger".

Logging Mill, Corton + update.

South Beach: Saw a guy looking at birds flying south just offshore. Thumbing through his bird book I asked him what he thought they were. He replied Oystercatcher, I then dropped  him a clanger. They were five male Tufted Duck. He then told me how he had travelled with his grandson for 2 hours to Minismere and failed to add to his small list. So I asked if he had ever seen a kittiwake. To which he said no, to which I replied there is one flying by. So take your grandson to the Claremont and see the nests. He was well pleased.

Butterfly Day today: So we saw a few about 500 in all,  with RINGLET, GATEWAY, SMALL COPPER, SIX SPOTTED BURNETT, RED ADMIRAL, and PAINTED LADY in the garden. Also SOUTHEREN HAWKER female. I think this is also a Funnel Web spider a pair of Hornet Wasps doing the business.
                                                                     Labyrinth spider (Agelena Labyrinthica )

North Dene's, Lowestoft.

Out before the rain.
Oval:  First called in at the Oval and found gulls encircling the green. Four of these were MED GULLS of which one was ringed. One bird was very smart but as you can see he was rather bored with cricket. "Blimey what a mouth you've got". Just one CARRION CROW and two MAGPIE for company.

North Dene's: There was a good flock of SWIFT hunting along cliff and across the Denes's, I would think in excesses of 100 birds all very busy. ROBIN, WREN, 2 DUNOCK, 5 WHITETHROAT, 3 GREENFINCH, 3 HOUSE SPARROW and 7 TURNSTONE along wall.
This large Meadow Brown was rather ambient or is it just old age.
