Somerlyton Staithe

I and my mate spent and hour and half sitting beside the river until the sun went down. Warm enough for the last day of October until the sun dropped and so did the temperature. Best bird for me was a GREY WAGTAIL which flew through along the river. It was also good with two CETTI'S WARBLER and the same count for BEARDED TIT'S. But the sound of roosting ROOK and CROW is absolutely great,

Pathways Care Farm

This visit was the regular call in and with 26 species in under an hour. The numbers of GADWALL again increased to 45 and as for WIGEON the same with 11 birds. LITTLE GREBE turned out at 11 and then it was off and heading for Links Hill. It was obvious on arrival that there was a movement of CORMORANT and I stopped counting at 400 birds and only three BRENT GEESE flew South.

Carlton Marsh, SWT.

Best bird for along while with a close encounter with a Female/Juvenal MERLIN . While sittine having my sandwich on the Pentegon platform a flock of 50 STARLING lifted into the air and with them 39 MEADOW PIPIT. Then on the rail on the platform 2 meters away sat looking at me this bird the size of thrush just sat briefly before setting off like a rocket. No picture but what a bird.

Abberton Res and Carlton Marsh

Short call in on the way through Layer. Just good to see so many duck with PINTAIL, MALLARD, GADWALL, TEAL, POCHARD, TUFTED DUCK, BLACK TAILED GODWIT, REDSHANK, LAPWING, MUTE SWAN CORMORANT,GREAT WHITE EGERET, LITTLE EGERET, GOLDEN PLOVER.

As for Carlton SWT the most beautiful MERLIN female landed on the rail of the Pentagon, just two meters away. It was to scared for a camera shot but what a bird. It put to flight a flock of 50 STARLING and 20 MEADOW PIPIT. Just one SNIPE, and a flock of 16 SKYLARK. A single STONECHAT put in an apperance and a KESTREL sat on post.

Carlton Marsh SWT

The regular volunteer afternoon brought in a species list of 35 which considering is good. With only light winds and inter sun birding was good. With the start of autumn things are starting to move. With SNIPE showing in flight and BEAREDED TITS and CETTI'S WARBLER. 3 STONECHAT on Share Marsh.

Links Hill, Gunton.

A regular drive through and awaiting me was a single PALE BREASTED BRENT GOOSE. He was being harassed by the CARRION CROWS, in fact there was 50 birds in the car park. I have never seen a brent in this area before and there was none out at sea. So must have just found it's way into the pools of water while being tired.

Pathways Care Farm

Links Hill; Regular call in and the largest count of Carrion Crow for me with 56 birds feeding from a car. Also WHITE WAG and a PIED as well. Four Brent geese deciding to return North.

PCF: Monday call in with BLACKCAP, SONG THRUSH, two BLACKBIRD and a single REDWING. A JAY flew through. But the best  was what I have been waiting for over the years, a close encounter of the KINGFISHER type. In fact it sat only 4 meters in front of the hide. Pic' s below and there may be a vid to follow.    https://youtu.be/Ukxwgki9X9c

Carlton Marsh SWT

Out on the marsh which means that 23 species altogether with the first SNIPE of the Autumn. But I was encouraged by a small flock of three SWALLOW. Feeding well  they were very active. A flock of 35 TEAL flew up from the Octagon and about seven DUNLIN swooped on through.
