Corton Old Sewag Works.

Overcast with light West breeze.

With 20 species of bird without gulls it was not a bad time. with counts of BLACKBIRD 7 and a flock of LINNET numbering 31and a pair of MEADOW PIPIT as well as 8 SKYLARK. There was also a flock of STARLING and WOOD PIGEON with woodys coming in at over a 100 birds. But the best bird was a GREAT SPOTTED WOOD which was brief.

Ness Point.

North wind so worth a look.

GANNETS still well offshore with all plumages. The best was an unusual combination of two BARNACLE GEESE and two SHELLDUCK in tandem flying North. But well out flying was at least 30 Auks id impossible but I did pick up on five COMMON GUILLEMOT. A few DUNLIN flying through with BRENT either way.

Oulton Marsh, Lowestoft.

Fairly warm day with a little breeze, I managed a species list of 28 for the walk.

Best bird was for me the COMMON BUZARD that sat in autumn light. But with good numbers of WREN 18 and BLACKBIRD 21. Also my first FIELDFARES of the end of year. As for CETTI'S WARBLER came in at 5 with a pair of STONECHAT.

Might have walked along way on migration but much more friendly than a year ago.

North Shore from Hamilton Dock, Lowestoft.

Bright and still a lovely morning with he sun gaining height over the water.

Didn't feel much like a walk due to cold. and car in dock. Small stuff about but the best was a STONECHAT which was climbing the heights of the granite rocks. Feeding well as flew from standing stone to standing stone. Fancy a stonechat on stones. CORMORANT flew South and REDWING overhead. PIED WAG about and STARLING, BLUE TIT, GREAT TIT, DUNNOCK.

Ness Point, Lowestoft.

South West wind but clear out to sea with a high tide.

Perhaps the best movement of birds for the Autumn so far with Auks well out except for one that was identifiable as a GUILLEMOT. But it was also good to see a BONXIE which was on the water and the flying North. GANNETS well I stopped counting at 95. A single GREAT CRESTYED GREBE heading North and 2 LAPWING South. In off saw small flocks of REDWING 11 and a ROBIN flew in and settled briefly. Also a single ROCK PIPIT was behind the wall. A pair of OYSTERCATCHER flew North close inshore. A few RED THROATED DIVER heading mostly North but one very dark bird raises a question. BRENT GEESE flying South also  raised in number to 55. Only a single COMMON GULL and COMMON SCOTER.

Blunderston Lanes, Suffolk.

A lovely Autumnal day on Blunderston Lanes

Birds have been flying in all night with REDWING and BLACKBIRD. While on this walk I counted over and resting at 132. But also MEADOW PIPITES and a few SKYLARK but the best was my first autumn run SISKIN of the year. I also had a pair of REED BUNTING. But a sad intrusion was the sight of a GREY HERON which was hanging by fishing line from its leg in a tree. But to balance this a really viewable male MKARSH HARRIER which was quartering land by Somerlyton Station. Of interest as well was the CARRION CROW with white on wing, the same bird I should imagine that I have seen at Corton logging mill.

Dip Farm and Gunton Railway track.

With a hurricane flying through the Irish sea we had some real odd sun tonight.

Best was a garden sighting of a pair of REDWING flying through. As for Dip Farm it was in many respects just that with one fly over SKYLARK and 7 JAYS as well as 10 GOLDCREST. As for CARRION CROW about 30 birds in all. COMMON GULL numbered 3 in adjacent field. Also had three RED ADMIRAL and a single WHITE.

Home

Little about over the house today but our young KESTREL from yesterday near the railway line crossed over and was feeding well on the roof behind house. This young bird has done well and moved on in its feeding habits. Which is good to see and should make it through. I could not tell what it was feeding on but it was I am sure a small mammal.
Small stuff flying over even some with Starling flock but no idea of id.

Ness Point and ride round North Suffolk.

Rather windy with stiff wind from the West.

Ness Point:   Little to shout about but a few RED THROATED DIVER flying both North and South. But mot CORMORANT up and down as well.

Benacre area:  Best bird here was a lovely MISTLE THRUSH which obliged and a WHITE PHEASANT which didn't. You can tell its that time of year again with RED LEGGED PARTRIDGE and PHESANTS all over the show. CHAFFINCH viewable and onto.
Cove Bottom:  Here we had two COMMON BUZZARD and a MARSH HARRIER squabbling over a carcase.
Southwold: At the boating lake a single juvenile BLACK TAILED GODWIT and a surprise was at least two BEARDED TIT. these are a first for me here at this site.

Sparrows nest,Ness Point, Lowestoft and home.

Overcast with low cloud all day.
Home:  Best bird this am was a PERI heading out to Lowestoft for late breakfast.
Sparrows Nest:  Best bird here today was a single REDWING which flew high into trees as I arrived, also another larger thrush but no id. Several BLACKBIRDS must have crept in and ROBINS to.
Ness Point:   Best here a pair of ROCK PIPITE but very flitty. There was an obvious movement of birds coming into the country. Mostly STARLING in flock from 12 to 100 with an estimated count of 220. GANNET came in at 16 and RED THROATED DIVER at 11. With a struggling BLACKBIRD in off. COMMON SCOTTER 18 South.
Links Hill:  GREENFINCH 20 birds and our most usual MED GULL with ring.

Home.

Home:   Went into the garden at the start of the day to dump rubbish in the bin. As soon as I went through the back door I heard a YELLOW BROWED WARBLER calling in the tree at the bottom of the garden. Dropped the rubbish grabbed the bins, but could not pin it down. It kept on calling until it flew off south after 20 minuets. Saw it go and no more calling so that was that one in the garden bag.
Also had PERI over and a GREY WAGTAIL.

Ness Point, Lowestoft.

Clear sea watch with moving cloud and West wind.

Ness Point:   GANNETS offshore  with a count of a 156 all heading North. Good numbers of young ones and inter plumage birds as well as adults. I also had 18 COMMON SCOTER through heading the same way in two flocks as well as 24 RED THROATED DIVER all over the show with one bird close on in. I could here a pipit assumed rock but could not pin it so not good. Also HARBOUR PORPOISE again today and two seals.

Linear Cycle Track, Lowestoft.

Inter weather with light wind from North West.

Linear Cycle Track: Walk right the way along to A12 brought not a hint of a warbler. But it did give some interest in a JAY which was intent on having a bath and a good splash. But also a GREY WAGTAIL which was at home in the stream behind six form college. he best about this walk was the 36 HOUSE SPARROWS. There was also a large flock of over 20 GOLDFINCH resting up with some asleep.

Ness Point, Gorleston and Lound Lakes.

Overnight a strong North West blew through a brought very little. Bright and inter cloud.

Ness Point: GANNET 14 birds all well out and 7 RED THROATED DIVER with 16 TURNSTONE keeping me company and hiding away from wind.

Leathes Ham: The best here was a KINGFISHER and 3 LITTLE GREBE, WITH 23 SHOVELER, TUFTED DUCK 6,WIGEON 10 and to finish of 12 COOT.

Gorleston:   COMMON GULL 1 which sat on beach as did a single MED GULL with red ring which has been sent to BTO. I also had a a SPARROWHAWK fly through chasing a small flock of STARLING.

Wednesday, 4 October 2017

Ness Point, Lowestoft.

Overcast with a strong West wind which gave long shots of birds and many went past undetected. Especially waders, which were all to far away to give id. Also birds well off the horizon were simply caught in haze and most assumed to be cormorant.

Ness Point:  Best bird was a close in running female RED BREASTED MERGANZER. Which I would have missed had it not been for Phil Jackson as we talked. Also three GREAT NORTHERN DIVER flying South as well as 7 RED THROATED DIVER all North. 2 BRENT GEESE heading the wrong way and a pair of BLACK TAILED GODWIT. Other than that 13 GANNET and 2 PIED WAGTAIL as well as 11 TURNSTONE.

Monday, 2 October 2017

Warren House Wood and Gunton Cliff.

Very strong wind from the West with a bright sky worsening.

Warren House Wood was rather quite in fact to much so with only 2 ROBIN and 2 GOLDCREST.

Gunton Cliff: Again little about except for a single CHIFFCHAFF and a KESTREL who was annoying a CARRION CROW. I did have a pair of JAY put in an appearance and very noisy to.

Links Hill: Held no surprises either except for a lone MED GULL which was keeping a BLACK HEADED GULL company.

What a waste of time that was?

Saw a Road Runner today in fact so many I gave up counting and sought sanctuary away from them all. Strong South wind and little at sea, so as resort  spent sometime with our friend in Hamilton Dock, pictures not the best as little light and windy.
